Folk Applied Arts Studio “Rītausma”

The folk applied arts studio “Rītausma” began its creative activity in 1970. Its members share an interest in Latvian cultural heritage and a desire to preserve, develop, and pass on traditional handicraft skills to future generations. The studio teaches and maintains various techniques — knitting, crocheting, knotting, embroidery, and lace‑making — creating interior items, clothing, and accessories often featuring ethnographic patterns. The studio was founded and led until 2006 by master craftswoman Biruta Šmite, later by Biruta Bīriņa, and since 2020 by Dagnija Liepa. Since 2008, the studio has been based at the “Iļģuciems” Cultural Centre. Its works are regularly exhibited in national and local exhibitions, and members actively participate in cultural events, promoting Latvian traditional handicrafts.
