The association provides cultural activities not only by organizing events but also by involving local residents and authors in shaping cultural processes.
The association consists of two institutions — the “Imanta” and “Iļģuciems” Cultural Centers. They are home to several folk dance groups, choirs, applied folk art studios, amateur theatres, painting studios, and other groups working to preserve intangible cultural heritage. The goal of the Pārdaugava Cultural Association is the development and continuity of these groups.
“Imanta” Cultural Center
The “Imanta” Cultural Center was built and opened in 1995 as a cultural center and cinema. Since its opening, several amateur art groups have been active there. Concerts, traditional holiday events, creative workshops, and other activities regularly take place at the “Imanta” Cultural Center. Art and educational exhibitions can be viewed free of charge in the center’s galleries. During the warm season, events also take place in the courtyard area of the center.
“Iļģuciems” Cultural Center
The “Iļģuciems” Cultural Center was founded in 1973, when construction began on a trade and public services complex in Iļģuciems. At that time, the neighborhood already had many residential buildings and a rapidly growing population. Since the city center was quite far away and there were no cultural institutions nearby, the district administration decided to allocate part of the complex for cultural needs. Today, the “Iļģuciems” Cultural Center hosts several amateur art groups and the Crafts House with applied arts studios. Exhibitions are displayed in the center’s premises, and various cultural events are held regularly.
